THE AURORA INSTRUCTONAL MODEL

A structured, research-informed approach to teaching and learning

Aurora Academic Charter School’s instructional model is grounded in direct instruction and shaped by a structured, research-informed approach to teaching and learning. Drawing on the work of educators such as Siegfried Engelmann, Madeline Hunter, and Barak Rosenshine, the model reflects Aurora’s commitment to clear teaching, purposeful lesson design, guided support, and academic mastery. Across Aurora classrooms.

Across Aurora classrooms, instruction follows a deliberate sequence that helps students understand new material, practise with support, and build confidence through independent application.

How a lesson unfolds at Aurora

Each lesson contains a "hook" or anticipatory set to draw students into the lesson, possible review, and stated objectives.
The teacher demonstrates, informs, models, or gives examples of the end-product of the lesson.
Students work on activities or exercises relative to the subject with teacher assistance and guidance.
Students practise independently to provide reinforcement of learning.
The lesson is summarised by the teacher and the objective is restated.
Assigned homework is completed by the students

Why this model matters
Aurora’s instructional model is designed to make learning clear, purposeful, and cumulative. Rather than leaving students to infer expectations or discover essential content on their own, teachers provide explicit instruction, guided support, and repeated opportunities to practise. This helps students build strong foundations, develop confidence, and progress with clarity.
