JANUARY 27, 2026

Dear Aurora families,

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. At our January Board meeting, we reviewed school progress across all campuses, celebrated key student achievements, and discussed important planning work underway to support student learning and family experience.

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS

Aurora students have returned from the winter break with strong momentum. Across all grade levels, teachers continue to focus on instructional refinement, student engagement, and preparation for upcoming spring assessments. Schools also continue to strengthen positive culture through clubs, leadership activities, school-wide initiatives, and recess programming.

We are also grateful for the ongoing collaboration across campuses, including significant support from Sherbrooke staff in mentoring and onboarding team members at Skyrattler.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT - SECONDARY CAMPUS SPOTLIGHT

Aurora’s Secondary Campus continues to provide outstanding academic and enrichment opportunities. A key highlight remains our dual credit programme, where students earn credits that can be applied toward post-secondary pathways. The Board was pleased to hear that fall semester results included exceptionally strong outcomes in multiple college and university courses.

We are also excited to share that, for the first time, Aurora is delivering a college-level dual credit course in-house, with Anatomy 1120 being taught by Madame Tuseva as an accredited instructor.

In addition, students continue to excel in competitions and leadership initiatives, including strong results in mathematics and debate, and new student-led service initiatives.

TRANSPORTATION UPDATE

Transportation remains an important area of focus for the Board and Administration. This year has brought some unique challenges due to seasonal road conditions and traffic across Edmonton; however, we are pleased to report that many routes have stabilised and that improvements are continuing.

The Transportation Committee has now met twice, and Administration

continues to review routes in partnership with our transportation provider and internal transportation leadership.

The Board also discussed the importance of proactive communication, especially early in the school year, so families have clear expectations and timely updates whenever adjustments are required.

FACILITIES & CAPITAL PLANNING (ALL CAMPUSES)

The Board reviewed facilities planning underway across all Aurora campuses. Administration has completed walkthroughs of our buildings and is gathering early estimates for future improvements so that budget planning can be proactive, transparent, and aligned to school needs.

Some facility priorities discussed included:

  • Skyrattler - planned enhancements to gymnasium space and exploration of a future learning commons

  • Sherbrooke - improvements to learning spaces and functionality, including more practical supports for student needs

  • Alberta Avenue - longer-term renewal planning for major student learning spaces including science and library programming

The Board is committed to ensuring Aurora facilities continue to reflect the quality, care, and learning environment our students deserve.

ATTENDANCE & SHARED COMMITMENT

The Board discussed student attendance as a core expectation of Aurora’s charter programme. Aurora is an academically rigourous, assessment-driven school, and consistent attendance is essential for students to fully participate in instruction, complete required assessments, and achieve expected learning outcomes.

Going forward, Aurora will be strengthening its attendance expectations and communication with families. Extended absences during the instructional year are not aligned with the commitments families make when choosing Aurora, and the school will respond more consistently when absences become frequent or prolonged.

To support families in planning, the Board of Directors has approved next year’s school calendar, and we are sharing it now so that families can plan well in advance. We strongly encourage families to use the Board-approved calendar to schedule vacations, travel, and appointments outside of instructional time whenever possible. This helps ensure students can fully participate in learning and assessment throughout the year, and supports the culture of academic commitment that defines Aurora.

LOOKING AHEAD

Our Board remains focused on ensuring that Aurora students thrive academically and socially, while AACS continues to grow in a thoughtful, well-supported manner. In the months ahead, the Board will continue work in the following areas:

  • Continued support for strong student learning, engagement, and achievement across all campuses

  • Responsible budget planning and financial stewardship

  • Facilities and capital improvement planning to support high-quality learning environments

  • Ongoing refinement of transportation systems and proactive family communication

  • Strengthened attendance expectations and clear planning supports for families

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we work together to ensure every Aurora student benefits from a rich, rigourous, and consistent learning experience.
