  • The Aurora Board of Directors held a virtual Board Meeting on June 17.  The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 starting at 6:30 pm.   

 

      HIghlights of the meeting include:

  • Motion passed third reading of Board Policy 3160 Conducting Research Studies 

  • Motioned passed cancelling the 2021 Europe International Field Trip.  All affected families will be emailed on how to complete the cancellation and refund process

  • Motion passed updating the Aurora School Action Plan for Charter Renewal

  • At the virtual June 18, 2020, Special General Meeting of the Members hosted by Board Chair Arlene Huhn, the membership (parents) passed the proposed amendments to the Vision, Mission, Values and Waitlist Process in the Aurora School Ltd. Charter Agreement.  These charter revisions will be submitted to the Minister of Education, Honourable Adriana LaGrange for final approval.

  • By August 1, 2020, Alberta Education and the Chief Medical Officer will re-confirm school re-entry plans based on the current COVID-19 situation.  This process will inform the particular scenario Alberta schools will follow.  The Board and School Administration will continue to keep parents updated on any changes to the school re-entry plans.   Additional information on Alberta school re-entry plans are accessible on our Aurora website.  Future information sessions (town hall meeting style either virtual or in-person - depending on current AHS recommendations) with parents, Board, and Aurora administrators will be planned in August to update on school re-entry plans, procedures, safety and wellness.

 

  • The Aurora Elementary Entrance renovation continues to take shape and is progressing well.  This renovation will include a new main entrance and reception area along with additional washrooms, offices, workrooms, flexible meeting rooms, and a large parent/student engagement area.  We thank you for your patience and support during this construction project.  

 

  • On behalf of our Aurora Board of Directors we wish Aurora families, staff, and community stakeholders a happy, healthy and enjoyable summer vacation.  The first day of school is August 24, 2020.

  • The Aurora teaching and learning team continue to provide online lessons and programming, along with remotely available learning resources and assessments during this COVID-19 Pandemic.  Our teaching staff are working with students and parents to support continued learning, assessment, grading progresses and report cards.  Your school principals, assistant principals, teachers and staff are accessible to support your learning and wellness by phone and email.  

  • The Aurora Board of Directors held their May Board Meeting virtually in compliance with  COVID-19 Pandemic recommendations and regulations for social distancing.  The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17 starting at 6:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend - please contact the Board Secretary, Susan Mallory at smallory@auroraschool.ca for the meeting link if you wish to attend the board meeting online.

  • All Aurora international field trips have been cancelled for this school year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  This includes cancellation of the Panterra Field Trip to Mexico for March/April 2020.  

 

  • The Aurora teaching and learning team will continue to provide online accessible and remotely available learning resources and assessments during this COVID-19 Pandemic while classes at school are cancelled as per the Alberta Government notifications.  Our teaching staff will continue to work with students and parents remotely to support continued learning, assessment, grading progresses and report cards. February 2020

  • The Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Alberta Minister of Education, visited Aurora during our Annual Science Fair on the evening of Thursday, January 30th, 2020.  The Minister toured our school and met with our Board Chair Arlene Huhn along with our many students, parents and staff. Honourable Adriana LaGrange helped with the Awards Ceremony following the Science Fair.  On behalf of our Aurora Board and stakeholders, we thank Honourable Adriana LaGrange for her caring visit and spending time with our Aurora teaching and learning team. 

 

  • Our Aurora research project “Parent Voice and Perspectives for Improvement of Engagement and Social Connectedness within the Multicultural Fabric and Culture of Schools” in collaboration with Edmonton Public Schools, University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University has recently completed the final research report accessible online at:  https://www.auroraschool.ca/research-publications on our Aurora website.  On February 26th, 2020 in our Aurora Learning Commons, the research team presented the findings of this project to our Aurora parents, students, and stakeholders.  We also participated in a presentation at Edmonton Public Schools. We thank Mother Earth’s Children’s Charter School for bringing students, parents and staff to share in the Land Acknowledgement and Dance Ceremony with our parents, staff, students, and researchers.  The research team consisted of Dr. Malcolm Steinberg (Simon Fraser University), Dr. Paul Wozny (Aurora), Dr. Owen Livermore (Edmonton Public Schools), Dr. Nicole Ofosu, Dr. Paul Veugelers, and Dr. Jim Parsons (University of Alberta.). We thank our parents with Aurora and Edmonton Public Schools that volunteered to participate in this project.  

 

  • The construction process with our Aurora Elementary Entrance renovation is now at the stage of concrete footings and foundation walls.  The forms are currently under construction and the concrete pouring will be commencing shortly. We look forward to our grand opening of this facility during the 2020/21 school year.

 

  • The next Aurora Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 starting at 6:30 pm in our Aurora Learning Commons.  

January 2020

  • The Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Alberta Minister of Education, will be visiting Aurora and our Annual Science Fair on Thursday, January 30th, 2020 at 5:15 pm.  Our Aurora Board Chair Arlene Huhn and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Paul Wozny look forward to greeting and introducing our Minister of Education to our superb Aurora students, parents, and community stakeholders. 

 

  • Our Aurora Elementary Construction/Renovation project is proceeding with the demolition process ongoing at this time.  We appreciate your patience and support with this ongoing process.   • Thank you for attending our Aurora Annual General Meeting held on Thursday evening, November 21, 2019.  Our Board of Directors’ governance team includes Arlene Huhn (Board Chair), Zahida Hirani-Saran (Board Vice-Chair), Shazin Mohamed-Standing, Robert Kossick, Felix Amenaghawon, Nokuthula Sithole and Kiera Hanrahan.  We are honoured to serve our exemplary Aurora parents, students, staff, and community stakeholders and look forward to an inspiring and successful school year.  

 

  • Our Aurora Board of Directors provide an important governance role and focus on high level policy decision-making when in Board formal meetings and functions as a corporate entity for Aurora School Ltd.  

    • Administration of schools and teaching staff is not done by the Board of Directors.  Administration is handled by Principals, Assistant Principals in coordination with the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.  

 

  • The Aurora Annual Education Results Report (AERR) 2018/19 and Three Plan 2019 to 2022 was approved by the Board is now posted on our Aurora website at:  https://www.auroraschool.ca/documents    Our Aurora students continue to achieve excellent academic results among the very highest in the province and our Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) results include a 99.3 % pass rate and excellence rate of 56.3%.  These results are significantly higher than the Alberta average of 73.6% pass rate and 20.6% excellence rate. Our Aurora students continue to distinguish themselves in exemplary achievement across all academic subjects.  We thank our staff a students for their continued excellence in academic learning, effort, and achievement.

  • Our important Aurora Academic Charter School, Aurora School Ltd.   • Re:  Important update - Albertans on Choice in Education Survey:

       Survey Online Link:  https://www.alberta.ca/choice-in-education-engagement.aspx

     The Alberta Government is conducting a survey for Albertans on Choice in Education to gather input from parents, staff, school council, and

     school boards on opportunities to protect, improve and enhance education choice in Alberta including: charter, public and separate schools,

     Francophone schools, private schools, early childhood education and home education.

     Parent feedback will be used to inform the development of the Choice in Education Act which will affirm that parents are the primary decision-       makers in their child’s education and support the range of choice within the current education system.

 

      We appreciate your support of our Aurora Academic Charter School teaching and learning system and appreciate your participation in this

      important survey on choice in education.

  • The Elementary School entrance construction is in full swing with abatement, demolition, and further work in progress.  The target date for

       completion of the entrance is June 30, 2020 barring any unforeseen construction delays.  We will endeavour to keep all stakeholders 

       informed on this project as it continues.

October 2019

  • Our Aurora teaching staff, administration and governance teams will be attending and participating in the TAAPCS (The Association of Alberta Public Charter Schools) Biennial Conference and Annual General Meeting, October 25th and 26th, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta.  This important conference brings our Alberta Charter Schools together in collaboration to share research, innovations, progress, along with the important TAAPCS Annual General Meeting with key stakeholders. Aurora researchers and University partners will be presenting and sharing research processes and findings at this provincial conference.

  • Work continues on the Elementary Entrance renovation.   The project is going smoothly and is on schedule. We all look forward to the opening of the new entrance in late Spring 2020 and would like to thank students, teachers and staff for their patience and understanding as the renovation project unfolds.  If you have any questions regarding the renovation plans, please contact Dr. Paul Wozny at the school.  

 

September 2019

 

 

  • Aurora is urgently requesting parents/community members for an Audit Committee, required by Alberta Education as stated in the new Education Act. This committee will have two to three meetings over the next two months, approximately a 10 hour commitment. The committee must have a minimum of 5 members including at least one member from the adult learning community, one member from the business community and one Board Director. If you are interested in finance, and are looking for a short term commitment, please contact our Aurora Secretary-Treasurer Holly Maccagno at: hmaccagno@auroraschool.ca

  • The renovation/construction of our Aurora Elementary main entrance is underway and we appreciate your patience over the next year during this process.  This project will feature a larger parent/student main entrance and engagement area, along with additional office space, meeting rooms, washrooms, and flexible work/learning areas.  The North parking is closed, but the two accessibility parking spots (must have placard) are still open for use along with the deliveries area directly adjacent the Aurora Middle School North Main Entrance.  Please avoid blocking the delivery access to the school.  

 

  • Development continues on the new Aurora Research and Innovation Fund (ARIF) that includes input from Alberta Education, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, Aurora Board of Directors, Aurora School Council, and Aurora stakeholders.  This fund will encourage and support research and innovation projects within Aurora and research partners/stakeholders from local to international with a focus on improving student learning, wellness, achievement and success.
