  • Our Aurora teaching staff, administration and governance teams will be attending and participating in the TAAPCS (The Association of Alberta Public Charter Schools) Biennial Conference and Annual General Meeting, October 25th and 26th, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta.  This important conference brings our Alberta Charter Schools together in collaboration to share research, innovations, progress, along with the important TAAPCS Annual General Meeting with key stakeholders. Aurora researchers and University partners will be presenting and sharing research processes and findings at this provincial conference.

  • The Aurora Academic Charter School, Aurora School Ltd. Annual General Meeting is on November 21, 2019 starting at 7:00 pm in the Aurora Learning Commons.  Child care is available during the meeting. All parents/members are invited to attend this important meeting that includes:

  • The next Aurora Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13, 2019 starting at 6:30 pm in our Aurora Learning Commons.  All parents, staff, and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend our monthly Board of Directors meeting.   

 

  • Work continues on the Elementary Entrance renovation.   The project is going smoothly and is on schedule. We all look forward to the opening of the new entrance in late Spring 2020 and would like to thank students, teachers and staff for their patience and understanding as the renovation project unfolds.  If you have any questions regarding the renovation plans, please contact Dr. Paul Wozny at the school.  

September 2019
 
  • Aurora is urgently requesting parents/community members for an Audit Committee, required by Alberta Education as stated in the new Education Act. This committee will have two to three meetings over the next two months, approximately a 10 hour commitment. The committee must have a minimum of 5 members including at least one member from the adult learning community, one member from the business community and one Board Director. If you are interested in finance, and are looking for a short term commitment, please contact our Aurora Secretary-Treasurer Holly Maccagno at: hmaccagno@auroraschool.ca

  • The renovation/construction of our Aurora Elementary main entrance is underway and we appreciate your patience over the next year during this process.  This project will feature a larger parent/student main entrance and engagement area, along with additional office space, meeting rooms, washrooms, and flexible work/learning areas.  The North parking is closed, but the two accessibility parking spots (must have placard) are still open for use along with the deliveries area directly adjacent the Aurora Middle School North Main Entrance.  Please avoid blocking the delivery access to the school.  

 

  • Development continues on the new Aurora Research and Innovation Fund (ARIF) that includes input from Alberta Education, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, Aurora Board of Directors, Aurora School Council, and Aurora stakeholders.  This fund will encourage and support research and innovation projects within Aurora and research partners/stakeholders from local to international with a focus on improving student learning, wellness, achievement and success.  

 

  • The next Aurora Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2019 starting at 6:30 pm in our Aurora Learning Commons.  All parents, staff, and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend our monthly Board of Directors meeting.

  • Dr. David Van Tamelen presented a detailed summary of the Aurora Parent and Staff survey results addressing our Aurora Charter vision, mission, philosophy, goals, system growth, and alignment with Alberta Education policy, regulations, and related practices.  The summary report generated from your survey input will be valuable as our Aurora Board of Directors continue to refine our vision, mission, philosophy and goals and continue the great legacy of Aurora in providing exemplary teaching, learning, and student achievement.  We had a large number of participants in the survey.  Thank you!

 

  • The renovation of our Aurora Elementary main entrance is projected to begin in July, 2019.  We appreciate your patience over the next year of the construction phase.  Our contractors will be meeting with our Project Manager and Senior Admin Team in July, 2019 for scheduling and safety protocols.  Further construction updates to follow.

 

  • Our Board and senior admin team are currently developing an Aurora Research and Innovation Fund (ARIF) to encourage and support our staff in developing and completing research projects to improve student learning, wellness, and achievement.  We are currently in dialogue with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Education to further develop and refine this research framework.  This framework will also improve the sharing of our research and related evidence with colleagues and stakeholders from local to international.

May 2019

  • Our Aurora Academic Charter School organization recently had our mid-term Evaluation completed by Alberta Education Field Services.  We thank our Aurora students, parents, staff, Board, School Council, and Alberta Education Field Services team for their support and efforts in this important process for our Aurora teaching and learning team and ongoing growth and systemic improvement.  This review process is a regular part of our operation as a public charter school in Alberta.  The findings of this Charter review process are accessible on the Aurora website under Governance/Documents header located at:  https://www.auroraschool.ca/documents

  • Our Aurora Policy Committee thank our Aurora staff and parents for their input into our Aurora Strategic Planning Processes and Charter updates via the online survey shared with our staff and parents earlier this month.  We thank Dr. David Van Tamelen for his expertise in developing this important survey process to gather stakeholder input into our organizational future, system growth, and alignment with Alberta Education policy, regulations, and related practices.  Parents are welcome to attend our Policy Committee Meetings that are held on a monthly basis.  Do not hesitate to contact any Aurora administrator for any further information or meeting schedule.

  • Our Aurora Board under advisement of Project Manager Randy Darr and Architects Robert Bennett and Peter Hohn have progressed to the Tender stage with the City of Edmonton for the Aurora Elementary School Front Entrance Renovation project.  During the Tender Stage, bids will be submitted for the construction of the Aurora Elementary Renovation project.  The Tender stage will be followed by Aurora Board of Directors review of bids and decision whether or not to proceed based on overall costs and available budget.

 

  • Our Aurora Research project in partnership with University of Alberta, Simon Fraser University and Edmonton Public Schools is progressing very well and we will be holding focus group discussions with voluntary Aurora parents during the month of May, 2019.  This study will be used to develop strategies to strengthen engagements with teachers, improve parent/teacher interview processes, and build social connectedness between families and our school community.  Participant contributions will be held in strict confidence and no participants will be identified in any results reported from this study.  If you have an interest to participate in the focus group discussion please contact Nicole Ofosu:  lartey@ualberta.ca or your school Principal: Jacquie Harman (Aurora Elementary) Email:   jharman@auroraschool.ca or Peter Dang (Aurora Middle School) Email:  pdang@auroraschool.ca by April 30, 2019.

 

  • Our next Aurora School Ltd. Annual General Meeting will be held on November 21, 2019, 7:00 pm in the Aurora Learning Commons.  All Aurora Parents are invited to this important event.  The Annual General Meeting includes:  a) Annual Report from the Chair of the Aurora Board of Directors; b) Review of Aurora Audited Financial Statements; c) Election of candidates for open spots on the Aurora Board of Directors; d) other business as determined by the Aurora Board of Directors in consultation with Aurora Stakeholders.

February 2019

      Important Update Aurora Charter Mid-Term Evaluation:

  • This school year our Aurora Academic Charter School is midterm in our 5 Year Charter with Alberta Education (2016 to 2021). During March 13 and 14, 2019, Alberta Education Field Services will have a team of 3 Senior Managers and 1 Acting Director engaged in formative evaluation of our Aurora teaching and learning team. This process occurs at the midpoint of each Charter term period. The Alberta Education Field Services team will visit our schools, classrooms, and perform a number of interviews with a sample of students, parents, staff, School Council, Board of Directors, administration, and community stakeholders. This process is an important and key aspect in our Charter review and ongoing systemic growth and improvement.

  • Our Aurora Board is currently engaged in the Development Permit approval process with the City of Edmonton for the Aurora Elementary School Front Entrance Renovation project. This process includes consultation with school and community stakeholders, Edmonton Public Schools, City of Edmonton and provincial regulatory stakeholders. After approval of the Development Permit, the Board may move to the Tender Stage where bids will be submitted for the construction of the Aurora Elementary Renovation project. The Tender stage will be followed by Aurora Board of Directors review of bids to assure financial feasibility.

January 2019
  • Congratulations to our nominated and acclaimed new Aurora Board Vice-Chair Robert Kossick.  Robert will be working with Aurora Board Chair Arlene Huhn and our dedicated volunteer Aurora Board of Directors’ team.

 

  • Superintendent Dr. Dale Bischoff provided a progress update on the Aurora Elementary front entrance renovation plan and development permit process with the City of Edmonton.  Final project approval will be at the discretion of the Board pending overall project costs and budget implications.

 

  • Aurora Board approved the purchase and installation of audio-visual equipment in the Aurora Elementary gymnasium “Bear Den.”  This equipment will include a high quality sound amplification system and high tech digital data projector. 

 

  • A new Aurora front main door electronic door lock and camera system has been installed.  This system will allow for additional security and access accountability during school and after-school hours.

 

  • NAIT Provost Kevin Shufflebotham and NAIT Academic Head John Kent visited our Aurora Academic Charter School and shared their appreciation of our exemplary teaching and learning team, programs, students, staff, and facilities.  We are currently exploring possible future partnerships in learning and research with NAIT and other post-secondary learning institutions in Alberta.

  • Our Board of Directors’ governance team includes Arlene Huhn (Board Chair), Shazin Mohamed-Standing (Director of Finances), Robert Kossick, Marcy D’Agostini, Nokuthula Sithole, Felix Amenaghawon, and Zahida Hirani-Saran.  We are honoured to serve our exemplary Aurora team and look forward to a superb 2019 school year.
     

    • Our Aurora Board of Directors provide an important governance role and focus on high level policy decision-making when in Board formal meetings and functions as a corporate entity for Aurora School Ltd.

    • Administration of schools and teaching staff is not done by the Board of Directors.  Administration is handled by Principals, Assistant Principals in coordination with the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.

  • An Aurora Academic High School strategic plan (prospectus) is currently under development with our Aurora Board of Directors, Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, School administration, School Council, and post-secondary potential partners.  This prospectus will provide the opportunity for parent/stakeholder input into innovative teaching and learning opportunities, facility requirements, implementation plan, staffing implications, enrolment estimates and projections, financial implications, educational research in support of our leading-edge high school programming, risk factors, accountability plan, communication plan and potential dual-credit secondary and post-secondary partnerships.   We will continue our collaborative efforts and strategic planning to eventually offer inspiring high school programs for our students and future.

  • Thank you Aurora Parents for the informative and highly attended Aurora School Ltd. Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was held on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018 in our Aurora Learning Commons.  The AGM included the election of 4 Board of Directors’ candidates to our superb Aurora Board of Directors’ team.  Our Board of Directors’ team with the addition of the 4 successful candidates includes:  Arlene Huhn, Robert Kossick, Marcy D’Agostini, Shazin Mohamed-Standing, Nokuthula Sithole, Felix Amenaghawon, and Zahida Hirani-Saran. Thank you for volunteering your leadership, time and dedication with our Aurora Governance Team and successful future of Aurora Academic Charter Schools!
     

  • Thank you to our Board of Directors’ Policy Committee Chair Marcy D”Agostini for her leadership and dedicated efforts in updating our Aurora Articles of Association.  The updated Aurora Articles of Association were approved at our Annual General Meeting (AGM).
     

  • The Aurora Audited Financial Statements for the 2017/18 School Year were approved at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).  We thank the dedicated service of our Aurora Secretary-Treasurer Holly Maccagno, Assistant Secretary-Treasure Marla Leganchuk, and Aurora Board of Directors’ Finances Committee Chair Shazin Mohamed-Standing for their dedication to assure financial prudence, accountability, accuracy and transparency with our Aurora stakeholders.
     

  • Our Aurora Board of Directors thanked the dedicated and caring past service of Paola Mayo and Rebecca Harrison during their tenure as Aurora Directors.
     

  • Our Aurora Board of Directors is currently engaged in the review of the Aurora Three Year Plan 2018 - 2021 and Annual Education Results Report (AERR).  This annual report will be completed, approved, and submitted to Alberta Education by November 30, 2018.

Our Aurora Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Paul Wozny and researcher Nicole Ofosu MSc, PhD candidate, University of Alberta, will be presenting our Aurora research project on Social Connectedness in partnership with University of Alberta, Simon Fraser University and Edmonton Public Schools.
